Almost
Unwearoutable opened in Hexham, Northumberland in 1936, providing hand-finished
knitted socks and stockings for country people, later a customer unwittingly gave
it a new name by calling the socks 'Almost Unwearoutable'.
Still in Northumberland, at Meale House, Stannington, we continue to use skilled
knitters in neighbouring villages and mining communities. Our reputation for quality,
comfort and durability remains in safe hands. With
an established knowledge of wool, I have used the best of handknitting together
with machine knitting to produce cardigans, jerseys, Fairisles, scarves, mitts
and garters to compliment our socks and stockings.
We
are always happy for customers to visit our premises - but please
call us first to arrange a suitable time.

Hardwearing
Quality
Skill, experience of traditional knitting and a commitment to
quality are the factors that make our products so durable. Made
on old-fashioned circular sock machines,
with tried and tested machine washable woollen yarn, each sock
is hand-turned and reinforced with linen thread. There are two
thicknesses - thin (4ply) socks that are slightly thicker than
normal, but fit inside shoes, and thick (8ply ) socks that are
double the thickness of 4ply and fit inside boots and wellies.
For
really heavy wear we twist the two strands of wool and knit it
double, and this produces a really tough (but comfortable) sock
or stocking which will stand up to any amount of hard wear in
boots or wellingtons.
Something
Special
Why not order stockings with names, initials, an emblem or a message
(for example, 'Bossy' on one leg and 'Socks' on the other). Whatever
you want - within reason!
Comfort above all
For comfort, sizing is everything. Average leg length for socks
is 12 inches (30 cms) and for stockings 24 inches (60 cms) including
turnover top. But people do not come in regular sizes! We can
vary dimensions to fit well-developed legs, or extra long oreven
skinny legs. Also we produce socks and stockings without elastic
for medical reasons. See our shoe &
sock sizing chart for reference.
With
our experience in knitting, cardigans, jerseys, Fair Isles, scarves, mitts and
garters have become part of our catalogue. Made in a range of colours, shapes
and sizes, whether to match a kilt, a favourite football club or to fit a tiny
child or well-covered grandfather, your choice can be knitted and sent. Golfers
find us irresistible!

I have found them to be the most comfortable in the heat of the jungle and up
here where I live, just below 8,000 feet, temperatures drop to zero in the winter.
